Light, Midsize or Heavy Jet? How to Pick the Size

Compare light, midsize, super midsize, heavy, and ultra long range jets by passengers, range, and cost so you charter the right aircraft.

Choosing a private jet size comes down to three inputs: how many passengers, how far you are flying, and whether you need to fly nonstop. Get those three right and the category picks itself. Get them wrong and you either overpay for range you do not use or add a fuel stop you did not plan for.

Here is what each category actually does.

What Are the Private Jet Categories?

Private aircraft fall into five practical categories: turboprops, light jets, midsize and super midsize jets, heavy jets, and ultra long range jets. They differ mainly in cabin size, passenger capacity, and nonstop range.

Turboprops carry 6 to 9 passengers roughly 1,000 to 1,500 nautical miles. Examples include the King Air 350 and Pilatus PC-12. They excel on short regional legs and can use short runways that jets cannot.

Light jets carry 6 to 8 passengers about 1,500 to 2,000 nautical miles. Think Phenom 300, Citation CJ3, or Learjet 75. This is the workhorse category for two to three hour trips.

Midsize jets carry 7 to 9 passengers about 2,000 to 2,800 nautical miles, with a stand up cabin on many types. The Citation XLS and Hawker 800XP live here.

Super midsize jets carry 8 to 10 passengers up to roughly 3,500 nautical miles. The Challenger 350, Citation X+, and Gulfstream G280 are typical. This category flies coast to coast in the US comfortably.

Heavy jets carry 10 to 16 passengers 4,000 to 5,000 nautical miles, with full galleys and enclosed lavatories. Falcon 900 and Challenger 605 are examples.

Ultra long range jets carry 13 to 19 passengers 7,000 nautical miles or more. The Gulfstream G650 and Bombardier Global 7500 fly New York to Tokyo without stopping.

How Do You Match Range to Your Route?

Match your route by taking the great circle distance in nautical miles and adding a margin of roughly 15% for winds, weather routing, and required fuel reserves. A published range figure is a best case number, not a schedule you can plan around.

Headwinds matter enormously on westbound US transcontinental flights. An aircraft that flies Los Angeles to New York nonstop with ease may need a fuel stop coming back in winter. This is the most common reason a trip that looked simple on paper picks up an extra hour.

Does Passenger Count or Range Decide the Aircraft?

Range usually decides. Most categories seat more people than they can carry at maximum range, because every passenger and bag reduces available fuel. Eight passengers with full luggage on a 3,000 nautical mile leg is a different aircraft than four passengers on the same route.

Which Jet Category Gives the Best Value?

The best value is the smallest category that flies your route nonstop with your full passenger load. Buying a category up for comfort is a legitimate choice, but it is a comfort purchase, not an efficiency one.

A quick reality check on cost: moving from light to super midsize on a two hour flight can more than double the trip cost. On a six hour flight, that same upgrade may be the difference between one stop and none, which changes the value calculation entirely.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a light jet fly across the United States?

Not nonstop in most cases. A typical light jet needs one fuel stop on a US transcontinental route, especially westbound. Super midsize is the practical entry point for reliable nonstop coast to coast flying.

How much luggage fits on a private jet?

Light jets typically hold 5 to 7 standard bags, midsize 7 to 9, and heavy jets considerably more. Golf bags, ski equipment, and oversized cases should always be declared when quoting, because baggage volume constrains more trips than weight does.

Do bigger jets need bigger airports?

Generally yes. Turboprops and light jets access far more short runway airports than heavy jets. If your destination has a short field, that constraint may decide the category before range does.
